If I could wish for something, I would wish that we, as people, could just be human without being defined by our diagnoses or syndromes. I would wish for us to be seen and heard as individuals, just the way we are. That’s why I wanted to design a beanie that aims to reduce stigmas as well as feelings of shame and loneliness. This beanie tells the unique and beautiful story of its wearer. The beanie is knitted from the bottom up in the round, and a pompom is crafted and attached to the top of the finished beanie. The pattern is beginner-friendly.
The beanie fits a wide range of head sizes, from children to adults. My head circumference is 56.5 cm (22.24”), but both my partner and child also wear this beanie.
Size: One size (circumference of the beanie unstretched approx. 34.5 cm / 13.75”).
Gauge: Approx. 29 sts x 25 rows = 10 x 10 cm / 4 x 4” in 2 x 2 Rib St pattern in the round, unstretched. Gauge is measured from the finished beanie.
Needles: 4.5 mm / US 7 circular needles, 40 cm (16”) and 80/100 cm (32-40”), or double-pointed needles for the crown decreases.
Yarn recommendations:
Option 1: 1 skein of Vuonue Elvi alpaca yarn (40 % Finnish sheep wool, 40 % alpaca wool, and 20 % tencel, 100 g = 400 m / 437 yds) holding yarn doubled for example by pulling the yarn from both ends of the ball.
Option 2: 1 skein of Vuonue Wilhelmi yarn (70 % Finnish sheep wool and 30% Tencel, 100 g = 400 m / 437 yds) holding yarn doubled for example by pulling the yarn from both ends of the ball.
Option 3: 1 skein of Linkulla Spinner's DK yarn (100 % Finnish alpaca wool, 100 g = 190 - 260 m), knitted with yarn held single.
You will also need a small amount of yarn of your choice for a larger or a smaller pom-pom. The pom-pom of the brown beanie was made using Vuonue Rescue Elsa yarn (100 g = 360 m / 394 yds, 14 g, color: Marjapuuro) and the lighter brown beanie from Linkulla Spinner's DK yarn (100 g = 250 m, 17 g).
Other supplies: 6 removable stitch markers, tapestry needle, and some cardboard and a compass.
Techniques: Slip slip knit improved and making a pom-pom.
